Basic tips on building link popularity for search engines. What is "link popularity"? In very simplistic terms, link popularity refers to the number and quality of the incoming links that are pointing to your site.

Links are very important in search engines, building link popularity is one of the most time consuming aspects of search engine marketing and the most difficult. The search engines don't want "artificially created links". Those who use link farms and exchange programs may find their sites spiraling down the listings.

Link building starts at the search Engine
Start by going to any of the major search engines that you want to get top listings in. Then search for your target keywords and phrases. Look at the sites that appear in the top 15 results, these are the sites that the search engine themselves have given top listings. Links with these sites can be very important for your site. Visit each of those web sites and ask the owners if they would be will link to you. Some will, some wont - you may want to offer a link back to them.

Give other site owners reasons to link to you
Content is king... The bottom line is sites link up to other sites because they provide information or resources for a particular topic of interests. Have you created enough reasons why other sites should link to yours?

Create a link page
Gives other Web sites permission to link to yours. Make it very easy for them to include you by providing cut and paste HTML code. Incorporate your keyphrases into the linking code. Make sure you create description under each link on your links page. so search engines don't thinking of you as a link farm.

Link Exchange Campaign
Leave your links every where you go. Anywhere you can leave your link, do it. In chat rooms, Ask a question (FAQ) areas, forums, and guest books. You would be surprised at where your link turns up on search engines when you start doing this. And if a search engine finds your link it will add this to your link popularity. Thus making your site easer for your target market to find you.
