Here's
a list of website development technical terms used at proshay.com.
Just a little helpful glossary.

C -
Cache
The use of part of your computer's memory to improve the performance
of a specific component. By storing recently accessed information
in a disk cache.
CGI-BIN
W/Preconfigured Scripts- (Common Gateway Interface) -- A set of rules that
describe how a Web Server communicates with another piece
of software on the same machine, and how the other piece of
software (the 'CGI program') talks to the web server.
Cluster
Size This is the smallest amount of hard disk space
a file can occupy.
Context
Menu The menu that appears when you right-click on
an object, such as a folder or a file. It's called a context
menu because the items in the menu depend on what's being
clicked - the menu is appropriate to the context.
Control
An element of the user interface, such as an icon, a button,
or a window.
Cooperative
Multitasking A type of multitasking where the operating
system assigns an equal amount of processor cycles to each
application, regardless of how much power it actually needs.
Preemtive multitasking (used in all modern versions of Microsoft
Windows) is more efficient than the cooperative multitasking
found in Windows 3.1.
CPU Central Processing Unit - this is another
name for the processor.
Cascading
Style Sheet (CSS) Code that defines the visual appearance,
style (size, color, font), or positioning of text on a Web
page. This code can be located inline or on the page it is
used on or can be stored in a separate (.css) file. Reference
Stylesheets Guide.
cloaking
- a bait and switch technique that delivers visitors a different
page from the one listed within the search engine. This technique
delivers specific pages to search engines while visitors are
re-directed to your home page. This technique is usually used
to trick the search engines and we do not practice such techniques.
Cost
Per Click (CPC) - Search engines which display results
not by relevancy but by the amount advertisers are willing
to pay to be listed on each search term
Content
Syndication - Either offering your own content for
use on other sites in exchange for a plug or link or using
content from other sites with permission. This is a good strategy
and effective quid pro quo for both parties. One receives
free publicity and the other receives unique and quality articles
for keyword optimization without having to write each proprietarily.
Offering your articles on other web sites is a great way to
build incoming links.
