Just a little helpful glossary.
RAM
Short for Random Access Memory - this is the main type of
memory in your computer. See ROM.
Reboot
The process of re-starting your computer. If you turn it off
and then on again, or use the reset button on the front of
your computer, it's called a cold boot. If you hold Ctrl and
Alt while pressing Del, it's called a warm-boot. See Boot.
Registry
A complicated database of settings for use in Windows. You
can edit these settings with the Registry Editor, REGEDIT.EXE.
The registry is stored in two files in your Windows directory,
USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT.
ROM
Short for Read-Only Memory - this is a type of storage or
memory that can only be read, not written to. A CD-ROM is
an example of a ROM storage. See RAM.
Root
Directory The top-level directory in the tree. For
drive C:, the root directory is signified by a single back-slash:
C:\.
Rank,
ranking. a website's actual placement or position
on a search engine results page for a certain search term
or phrase. It is meaningless to speak of website rank without
specifying what search words or phrase you are ranked for.
Sometimes confused with PageRank - the two are totally separate
concepts.
Robot.
The software program which a search engine runs to read and
analyze your site. See also spider. Google's robots are called
Googlebot and Freshbot.
relevancy
- a term used to describe the accuracy of search engine results.
relevancy
algorithm - a method used by search engines to deliver
the most accurate results to users. The algorithm is the nuts
& bolts of the search engine.
robots.txt
- a file used to instruct and guide search engine spiders
on a specific Web site.
Ranking
- The number that your web site is listed for a specific search
term in a specific search engine.
Ranking
Algorithm - the proprietary mathematical formulas,
variables, and set of weights that a search engines uses to
determine a site's ranking for a keyword search. Search engines
guard these carefully.
Registrar
- Company through which you can register domain names
Reciprocal
links Outbound links exchanged for inbound links.
