search
engine - An automated system that relies on a software
agent (otherwise known as spiders, robots or crawlers) that
explores the World Wide Web following links from site to site
and catalogues relevant text and content storing web pages
and creating customized index base upon users query into the
search engine's database.

Engine Marketing (SEM) This is a newer term and separates
what was once part of the function of a Search Engine optimizer,
Search Engine Marketing specifically is the function of locating,
researching, submitting, and positioning a web site within
the proper search engines for maximum exposure and effectiveness.
SEM may also include the function of choosing the target keywords
and keyword phrases for the web site's meta tags

engine optimization - a term that refers to the customization
of a webpage or a number of webpages to rank high in search
engines for specific keywords.
SEO
- The act of optimizing a webpage and/or web site
to perform well in the search engines. There is a growing
niche of consultants and firms who specialize in this.
Search engine optimization (SEO) The process of
updating HTML code and choosing targeted keyword phrases related
to a site, and ensuring that the site places well when those
keywords are queried on search engines. Search Engine Optimization
(SEO) involves the careful optimization of corporate web sites
to effectively increase their visibility in the major search
engines such as Google, Yahoo, Alta-Vista, Inktomi and many
others. It makes the difference between a web site that has
very little visibility and one that will be seen and found
by millions of people.

a Web site to a specific search engine or directory.

engine positioning - similar to search engine optimization,
positioning refers to the constant monitoring and modifying
of a Web site to achieve a higher ranking.

engine Spam Excessive manipulation to influence search
engine rankings, often for pages which contain little or no
relevant content. Can result in penalization of a web site.
Search engine submission Inserting a URL
into a search engine "submit" form in order make
the search engine aware of a site or page for indexing and
positioning.
Server
A computer on a network that handles a specific function for
the rest of the network. For example, a print server can allow
all the computers on a LAN use a printer. A World Wide Web
server contains pages (like what you're viewing) that are
sent to other computers on the Internet for viewing.
Site
Map - A page on a web site that lists and links to
every other page on that web site.
SMTP
Mail Server - An e-mail server that uses the Simple
Mail Transfer Protocol.

Code - The code of a web page that must be optimized
for the search engines. You can view top ranked sites source
code to gain information on what they have done to obtain
their top ranking.
Spider
- or robot, a software robot that crawls and scans
the web and indexes webpages, collects data that is analyzed
used for ranking algorithms for search engines.
Static
Content - Content on a web site that is hard coded
onto the page and does not come from a database. Search engines
have no problems indexing this content, unlike dynamic content.

IP Address - Every
computer connected to the Internet is assigned a unique number
known as an Internet Protocol (IP) address. A static IP address
is an IP addresses whose value does not change.
Stemming
- the action performed by a search engine where it takes the
stem of a keyword and delivers similar results. For example,
a keyword "run" may return results for "running"
or "runner".
Stop
words - a conjunction or preposition such as "and"
or "to" that is ignored by search engines because
of its irrelevancy.

Subdomains are a way of creating separate accounts within
your master account, which are accessed as separate URLs.
Submission
Service - A service which charges a fee to submit
your site to the search engines for you. Using these will
usually be unnecessary as it is free to submit to the search
engines and you only need to submit to five separate engines
to be listing in every one of the top ten.
