Tips on search engine submission, placement and marketing. Wonder just how search engines find and rank your web pages? Find out what you can do to improve your sites search engine rankings by search engine submitting, building link popularity, using page design, HTML meta tags, and other useful tips.

Quick guide to help your get listed. Know the difference between search engine submission and search engine optimization, both are used to promote sites on search engines.

Search Engine Submission
Getting registered or commonly known as the term 'getting your website listed' on search engines. *Special note - Getting your site listed in a search engine does not mean that you will be ranking for any of your key terms, it simply means that you have placed your site in a position that the search engine knows your site exist on line.

Search Engine Optimization
Is the act of improving your sites chances of ranking for key terms that you would like to be placed in. This is the goal for many site owners.. Getting on the "Top Ten" position for any particular keywords or search terms. Correctly done Search Engine Optimization can help increase your traffic and bring you qualified customers to your site.

Back to Search engine submissions
There are a few ways to get listed in search engines, paid participation programs that are offered by search engines and free search engine submission. Using the paid programs can speed up the listing process and can generate more search engine related traffic for your site.

What you need to prepare before directory submitting
Create a 25 word description of your site. Your description needs to use 2 or 3 keyword terms so that you can be found in the directory. You may want to consider researching the best terms related to your site. Find out what people search for in a few areas help allow you to find such terms.

Submit your site to Yahoo
The first thing to do is check with Yahoo, whether your site is already listed. Type in the search area your url.com, if you are in there, there is no need to submit your site again. Yahoo has to options for it's submission process:

  • Standard (Free non-commercial category) - click on the "Suggest a Site" link at the tip right-hand corner of a catefory page. Fill out the submission form and then you are done.
  • Yahoo Express (submission fee) - Pick a category, use the Yahoo Express Submission Form.

Submit to The Open Directory
This is essential for any site owner. The Open Directory is a volunteer-built Directory to the web. It is a free submission. Yet there is no guarantee if or when you will be accepted. First locate the category you want to be listed in. Then use the "add URL" link at the top of the category page. Fill out the form. If you are accepted, you should see your site appear within about three weeks. If this doesn't happen, then you should resubmit after that time period.

Submitting To Google
Thus far Google is most important crawler-based search engines. Crawler-based search engines visit web pages to compile their listings. Unlike directories, you can have several pages listed with them, expecialy if you optimize your pages, you might have good results in ranking.

To get listed with Google you will need to build links to your website. Crawlers follow web links, so if you have good relatedlinks pointing to your site, the crawlers are more likely to find and include your pages.

There are no guarantees that Google will include your URL yet they have an Add URL page that lets you submit your site directly to its crawler.

If you have a new site, it can take up to a month before Google lists your web pages.

Submitting To Teoma
Teoma has no free Add URL page, yet Teoma crawls the web, so if you build relevant links to your site, you could get includen naturally.

Submitting To MSN
MSN is a crawler-based search engine. Right now it's powered by Yahoo's results. Later a new crawler-based search engine that is being developed by Microsoft should be taking over.
